Hello, I am Officer Roberto Hernandez with the Plano Police Department. I am the School Liaison Officer for School District #88. I have been with the Plano Police Department since January of 2007. In working as the school liaison I also help the DARE Officer within the schools.
The DARE program is a cooperative effort between the schools and Plano Police Department to keep kids off of drugs. DARE increases self esteem, helps children consider consequences, promotes positive role models, and teaches numerous ways to manage stress. DARE is taught by a uniformed police officer for grades K-2 and 5th and 6th grades.
The Plano Police Department and the community work hard to keep the DARE Program going strong. The police department holds an annual raffle, which has great prizes that are donated by the local businesses. The money from our fundraisers goes toward a DARE Graduation Ceremony, prizes for the students, and T-shirts.
As a school liaison officer, I work in all of the schools of Plano District #88. The main goal of this position is to bridge the gap between students, school officials and law enforcement.
My role as school liaison officer consists of many duties. I am able to enforce any criminal code violation that occurs on school property. If a student feels they need to talk to someone they can come see me. I also assist parents who have questions about their child or incidents that have occurred within the school. I feel that this is one of the most important duties in becoming a police officer. Being seen and interacting with students will help bridge the gap that all law enforcement officers have with young adults within the community. I also attend extra curricular activities such as sporting events, prom, homecoming and graduation.
